Badger Brew-Off Rules

Categories

This competition uses the 2008 BJCP style guidelines. Each entry must be classified as one of these styles for judging purposes. Please choose styles carefully. Entries will be judged as an example of the chosen style. Judges will not reclassify entries. Please be sure to include special ingredients where indicated in the BJCP guidelines (i.e. special categories).

Prizes

Each BJCP Category will receive a ribbon and/or a prize. MHTG does reserve the right to combine categories if there are limited entries in particular categories. In recognition of our competition heritage MHTG will award special prizes in accordance with our previous competitions. In honor of our Big and Huge Competition, the Wooly Mammoth will be awarded for the highest scoring beer with a original gravity of 1.075 or higher, and the Hairless Mouse will be awarded to the BOS round for Cider, Mead and Sake. Special ribbons and a Best of Show will be awarded for the French and Belgian Categories in honor of the Franco-Belgian Challenge Cup.

Eligibility

Entries must be beer, mead or cider that was brewed at home. Beverages made at a commercial premise, including brew-on-premise establishments, are not eligible.

Entry Fee

The fee for each entry is $5. Please make checks payable to Madison Homebrewers and Tasters Guild.

Entries

For each entry, the brewer must submit:

  • Two 12 ounce bottles or one 22 ounce or larger bottle. Three bottles are required if you would like to be eligible for the Franco-Belgian Best of Show for BJCP categories 16 through 18. Attach bottle identification forms to each bottle with a rubber band. Bottles and caps should have no labels or identifying marks. Soft drink or other printed crown caps are acceptable if the caps have been blacked out. No swing tops will be accepted.
  • Entries must be entered online at: http://mhtg.brewcompetition.com/
  • A check made out to Madison Homebrewers and Tasters Guild with the appropriate entry fee for total number of entries.
  • Only one entry per brewer, per subcategory is allowed.

For your entry to do best, be sure to supply all of the required information and as much optional information as is appropriate for the style. Refer to the style guidelines for the styles that require or may benefit from additional information. Judging

Each entry will be judged by a panel of at least two judges, at least one  of whom has achieved Recognized rank in the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP). The first round of judging will determine the top three entries in each award category. The first place entry in each award category will then compete for Best of Show.

Miscellaneous

Awards, score sheets, and BJCP experience records will be sent out within three weeks of the competition date. Any questions or disputes will be settled by the competition organizers, and all decisions will be final. Entries become the property of the Madison Homebrewers and Tasters Guild and will not be returned.
